What Is Running Pace?

Running pace is the time it takes you to run one unit of distance — expressed as minutes per mile (min/mi) or minutes per kilometer (min/km). It is the primary metric runners use to measure and communicate effort because it is directly actionable: you can set a treadmill to a specific speed, program a GPS watch to alert you when you go too fast or slow, and compare runs of different distances on equal terms.

Pace is the inverse of speed. A lower pace number means you are running faster. A pace of 7:00 min/mile is faster than 8:00 min/mile. This is counterintuitive for people used to thinking in speed (mph or km/h), where a larger number is faster. Once you internalize the inverse relationship, pace becomes a much more useful number for running than speed because it tells you directly how long each mile or kilometer will take.

The Pace Formula Explained

All three pace-related calculations come from the same relationship between pace, time, and distance. Rearranging gives you three formulas:

Pace = Total Time (seconds) ÷ Distance
Time = Pace (seconds/unit) × Distance
Distance = Total Time (seconds) ÷ Pace (seconds/unit)

The key step is converting everything to seconds before dividing, then converting the result back to hours/minutes/seconds for display. For example:

  • Converting time to seconds: 1 hour 23 minutes 45 seconds = (1 × 3600) + (23 × 60) + 45 = 5,025 seconds
  • Calculating pace in seconds: 5,025 seconds ÷ 10 km = 502.5 seconds/km
  • Converting seconds back to min:sec: 502.5 ÷ 60 = 8 minutes + 22.5 seconds = 8:22 min/km

LIMITATIONS The Riegel formula assumes proportional training and consistent effort. It tends to underpredict marathon times for runners who have not trained specifically for marathon distance (long runs over 18–20 miles), and overpredict for runners with very high weekly mileage relative to their race-pace fitness. Negative Splits and Race Pacing Strategy

Pacing strategy — how you distribute your energy across a race — is one of the biggest determinants of performance. Three main strategies:

  • Positive split: Running the first half faster than the second half. The most common mistake among recreational racers. Practical pacing rules by race distance:

TREADMILL INCLINE NOTE Running on a flat treadmill is slightly easier than running outdoors at the same pace because there is no wind resistance and the belt assists leg turnover. Common Pacing Mistakes Runners Make
